It’s Men’s Health Week. The purpose of Men’s Health Week is to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys.
As we celebrate Men’s Health Week, let’s talk about heart health. Heart disease affects young and older men but you can take control of supporting your heart health. Here are three tips courtesy of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
Manage conditions. If you have been diagnosed with conditions such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol, educate yourself and work with your health care team. This includes taking any medicines you have been prescribed and considering lifestyle changes.
Make heart-healthy eating changes. Take a thorough evaluation of your overall diet and eating habits. Transition to an eating plan that will support your heart health. Incorporate foods low in trans fat, saturated fat, added sugar, and sodium. Watch your portion sizes and try to fill at least half your plate with vegetables and fruits.
Stay active. Aerobic exercise not only supports your heart health, but can help lower your blood pressure and cholesterol. Get moving for at least 150 minutes per week. You can even break up the exercise into 10-minute blocks for a total of 30 minutes in a day.
