Looking to conquer your first 5k and support a great cause? Avera McKennan Fitness Center’s Couch to 5k program is here to help! This beginner-friendly program provides a structured, 6-week training plan to guide you towards running a 5k comfortably. By participating, you’ll not only achieve your personal goal of running a 5k, but you’ll also be contributing to the fight against cancer. Proceeds from the Avera Race Against Cancer support critical cancer care services in our community.
Special note for non-members of Avera McKennan Fitness Center: The Couch to 5k program is open to the entire community, and everyone is invited to participate, regardless of membership status at Avera McKennan Fitness Center. Non-members interested in joining the Couch to 5k program should register in person at the fitness center. Upon registration, non-members will receive a temporary 6-week membership, valid from April 7 through May 11, granting access to the fitness center facilities. During this temporary membership period, non-members may complete workouts either in person or by utilizing Volt Guided Fitness (Volt). Additionally, a virtual experience is available for those who prefer to participate remotely. This virtual option does not include access to the fitness center. Join us in achieving your fitness goals—everyone is welcome!
DATES: Sunday, April 7 – Saturday, May 11 (Race Day)
COST (includes this program AND race registration fee):
Member – $90/person
Non-member – $160/person
Virtual Member – $130/person
Couch to 5k will consist of self-guided Volt Guided Fitness workouts and in person group workouts (optional to attend). All participants will be placed in one of two groups within Volt, an in-person 5k group or a virtual 5k group. You will be able to chat with fitness staff and Couch to 5k participants within your designated group.
In-person experience
Participants will receive a 6 week workout program designed by the center’s fitness staff, unlimited chat messages and a weekly in person workout on Fridays.
Virtual experience
Virtual participants will have access to all workouts in Volt. The virtual experience includes an individualized exercise plan through Volt, unlimited chat messages with your Remote Health and Fitness Coach Monday through Friday within 24 hour response, and virtual coaching sessions (nutrition, sleep, mindset, etc.).
Our program provides a progressive training schedule, with workouts increasing in intensity and duration throughout the weeks. Our fitness staff is available to answer questions and provide support throughout the program. You’ll receive guidance on running, mobility, strength, and rest days, ensuring you’re prepared for race day.
